Monstrous does Lichtspiel at REDCAP

On November 3rd, Jason had the honor and privilege to hop around REDCAP, Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles for a special treat. Presented by REDCAP and the Center for Visual Music, this event collected some of the best artists in this genre to showcase their creations. What Jason witnessed and experienced was a beautiful collection of visual animation and light art that helped fuel some awesome ideas for future games to come! Mixing, light, sound, and animation is what Monstrous is all about, so this was an opportunity not to miss!

Here is a brief write up of the event:

"This ravishing "play of light" explores rhythmic abstractions in the cinematic tradition of Oskar Fischinger and visual music animation. The centerpiece of the program is the Los Angeles debut of Joost Rekveld's #37 (Netherlands, 2009, 31 min., 35mm CinemaScope), a stunningly beautiful study of the propagation and diffraction of light through crystalline structures. Sure to bend more than a few minds, the lineup also offers award-winning animated shorts from around the world, most of which are screening in L.A. for the first time. Featured artists include Scott Draves, Robert Seidel, Steven Woloshen, Bärbel Neubauer, Thorsten Fleisch, Bret Battey, Michael Scroggins, Samantha Krukowski, Mondi, Devon Damonte, Scott Nyerges, Vivek Patel, Yusuke Nakajima and more. Plus the final film by the late CGI wizard Richard "Doc" Baily. With Joost Rekveld in person.Images above courtesy Joost Rekveld and Scott Draves.

Lichtspiel showcases a variety of animation techniques, from handmade camera-less (hand-painted, taped and scratched) films to traditional drawn animation to live-object animation to microphotography and state-of-the-art 3D computer graphics. Visual music styles are just as varied, with some artists like Draves and Baily writing computer code to realize their visions, while others draw inspiration from the pioneering work of Fischinger or the cosmic meditations of Jordan Belson."

Monstrous had the opportunity to reach out to a whole new section of people a few weeks ago when it was invited to attend the latest Chillography event in Seattle, WA to showcase Entranced. Chillography was established in the summer of '08 by three individuals who have a passion for creating atmosphere, good vibes, and chill/downtempo music. Our own Adrian was one of these individuals, and we figured that Entranced would be an excellent fit as the artists within the game are seen with high regard inside the chill community. Awesome visuals and awesome music created together.

The night was a blast for everyone involved and Jason had an excellent time getting some hands-on and face time with various people who were drawn to the giant screen with the game splashed across it. Here are two links with some pictures from the event!

Ever wonder how music can heal? If you are in the San Francisco/Berkeley California region come check out a talk on this exact thing! This lecture should pull in some of the theory and ideas we had while creating Entranced, as well as why specific artists were asked to be a part of the process and what they represent to us.
